Try this.Select the actual data files or folders and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/C ( press the Ctrl key and hold, then also press the C key ) to copy. Your error with " The thumb drive retained the path of my file on the old computer, and HP/Windows 10 gave a message "Can't find this file at the location listed" indicates you copied shortcuts to the files rather than the actual files. That would be what Laplink is for and that doesnt always work either, especially considering your going from Vista to Windows 10. You cannot "copy" actual " installed programs" over to the newer PC. Externals are cheaper per gig and you would now have a nice backup of your stuff. If you have hundreds of gigs of files to copy, you would want to get an external hard drive to put those on. How any files are we talking about copying over? Up to a few gigs or hundreds of gigs? Provided you are only copying stuff like Documents, Photos, Videos, Music.
